Hello Dungeon Crawlers, and welcome back! I recently got a puppy, and she has been the only thing I could focus on in the last few weeks, but I am back and ready to continue the Unearthed Arcana Series. This week, we will look at the changes and updates to the Paladin class.
Paladins are known for being the knight in shining armor. They are always doing what is right and keeping order within the group. Formerly, in the 1st to 3rd editions of the Player’s Handbook, the character was required to have a lawful good alignment. Here is the updated chart for the Paladin:
The first change to the class was that spellcasting was moved up to 1st level from 2nd. This allows the character to test out using spells from the beginning. Another change to the class is that the paladin now gets Channel Divinity as third instead of second.
Some new features are at level 5, such as faithful steed. The spell Find Steed is prepared for a paladin and doesn’t count when you prepare spells. You can use it once, and it will reset after a long rest. Next is Radiant Strikes at the 11th level. When you attack with a simple or martial weapon, you can add 1d8 radiant damage onto the damage roll. Lastly is Epic Boon at level 20. You gain two features here: an ability score improvement, which you can add two to any ability score, and it can go above 20! You also gain the Epic Boon of Truesight or the Epic Boon of your choice.
Overall, the Paladin changes look pretty epic to me! Next week, I will give you my honest opinion of the playtest material for the newest Player’s Handbook! See you then!
