Legends & Lore - Xenagos, God of Revels

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Xenagos was a satyr planeswalker hailing from the plane of Theros. He also went by the name King Stranger and would eventually ascend to the pantheon of gods on Theros as the God of Revels.

Xenagos was born to a mother, Raissa, who ignored the traditions of the satyrs on Theros and decided to raise Xenagos after he was born instead of abandoning him. She was convinced that he was destined for greatness. As Xenagos got older his violent tendencies began to manifest, culminating in his killing of another child. Raissa and Xenagos were forced to flee their home in Setessa. Reaching the age of six, Xenagos would turn his ire towards his mother, attempting to kill her multiple times. Raissa searched for answers as to why, but all she found were visions of her son confronting the gods themselves.

The satyrs of Theros lead a hedonistic lifestyle in which their days are an unending revel. Xenagos was no different, living a life of good food, drink, dancing, and partying. The most depraved of these revelries are known as Bakkeia, featuring violence, sometimes sacrifices, and general madness. During one of these Bakkeia Xenagos’ planeswalker spark ignited, bringing him the power to walk the planes. True to form, he took this opportunity to party across the planes.

After traveling the multiverse, he became dissatisfied with the endless revels and his perceived insignificance in the vastness of the multiverse. Realizing that the gods of Theros held no swap or importance beyond the plane itself, he returned to Theros with new ambitions. Deciding the gods were unworthy, he set in motion events to elevate himself to either join the pantheon or replace it completely.

Learning that the secret to each god’s power on Theros flowed from the belief and support of their followers, he hatched a plot to gain followers of his own. Xenagos sent armies of monsters against the cities of Setessa, Akros, and Melitis, causing chaos and cutting off the connections between the gods and their oracles. This slowly caused panic in the pantheon, with the gods blaming each other for the issues on Theros.

With a final celebration of victory in Akros over an invading army coupled with his growing number of devout followers, Xenagos ascended to the pantheon as the God of Revels. His ascension created even more distrust among the gods, with Heliod being the most offended by this mortal who he deemed “the usurper” joining their ranks.

Unfortunately Xenagos’ time in Nyx with the gods would be a short one. His rise and his conscription of Nyxborn creatures intended to cement his godhood threw the plane of Theros into total chaos. Just days after becoming a god, the planeswalker Elspeth, Champion of Heliod and bearer of the weapon Godsend, arrived in Nyx with fellow planeswalker Ajani to set things right. After a hard-fought battle, Elspeth was able to stab Xenagos in the chest with Godsend, ending his short reign for good as gods do not go to the Underworld when they die.
