Legends & Lore: Will and Rowan Kenrith

Who are Will and Rowan Kenrith?

Will and Rowan Kenrith hail from the plane of Eldraine, a realm steeped in fairy tales and folklore, where knights and mythical creatures roam. They were born into the royal family of Kenrith, destined to inherit the kingdom's mantle. From a young age, it was evident that the twins possessed an extraordinary connection beyond the usual sibling bond. Their kinship was as much a magical phenomenon as it was familial.

Their father, King Algenus Kenrith, and stepmother, Queen Linden, were prominent figures in the kingdom. The twins, however, discover their innate planeswalker abilities during their journey, a revelation that propels them into the broader world of Magic: The Gathering.

During a momentous event in Eldraine, the twins faced a dire situation that pushed them to their limits. In this critical juncture, their planeswalker abilities awakened. The revelation marked a turning point in their lives, propelling them into a newfound understanding of their potential and the realization that they were more than mere royalty.

Their abilities, deeply entwined with the essence of Eldraine, showcased their mastery over blue and red mana. While Will demonstrates proficiency in ice magic to showcase his reserved fight style, Rowan exhibits control over electricity to augment her swift combat finesse, representing their individual personas yet highlighting their unbreakable bond as siblings.

Their Story

The Twins’ Birth

While the twins’ father was King Algenus Kenrith, Queen Linden was actually their adoptive mother. The twins were born from a witch who had bewitched King Kenrith into living with her. When the twins were born, the witch killed them to extend her own life, and they were only saved when Queen Linden sacrificed the power with her magical sword to spare their lives, becoming their adoptive mother in the process.

Growing up, the twins were never told of their birth mother, who also happened to be the sister of the witches Agatha, Eriette, and Hylda. While they were always treated as full-blooded Kenriths, the twins exhibited extraordinary powers and a powerful connection to each other.

The Wildered Quest

When the twins were eighteen years of age, their father mysteriously disappeared, kidnapped by the faerie planeswalker Oko and the cursed planeswalker Garruk Wildspeaker. Will and Rowan discover that their father had been turned into a stag, but before they can save their father, he is killed during an event called ‘The Wild Hunt,’ where elves from the wilds of Eldraine perform a yearly ritualistic hunt.

Thankfully, Queen Linden’s magic was very proficient at bringing individuals back from the dead, and she revived the King soon after his death. Soon after, Will and Rowan learn of their cursed birth and are outraged that they were not told earlier. Their anger ignites their planeswalker spark, and they planeswalk away from Eldraine.

During the events of the Wildered Quest, Will has the opportunity to save Garruk Wildspeaker’s life. This act of selflessness summoned the Cauldron of Eternity, which removed the curse of the Chain Veil from Garruk in the process. To repay the Kenrith’s for removing the curse, Garruk promises the King and Queen that he will find their children and keep them safe from harm.

Adventures as Planeswalkers

After a short stint in Kylem after becoming the champions of Valor’s Reach, Will and Rowan found themselves invited to the school of Strixhaven on Arcavios. They were taught by Professor Onyx (Liliana Vess), who recognized them as planeswalkers and decided to further their training.

When an army of mage hunters attacked Strixhaven, Will and Rowan teamed up with Professor Onyx to repel the attack. They eventually came face-to-face with the leader of the invaders, Extus Narr, who had summoned a being known as a Blood Avatar, a creature of war. During the fight, Professor Onyx planeswalked away, leaving Will and Rowan alone to fight the monster. However, after combining their powers, Will was able to gain control over the Blood Avatar, using it to slay Extus Narr and banish itself back into oblivion.

The Phyrexian Invasion and the Great Slumber

During the events of the Phyrexian Invasion, King Algenus Kenrith and Queen Linden gave up their lives while defending Castle Ardenvale from the Phyrexians. When all had seemed lost on Eldraine, the fae lord Talion teamed up with the witches Agatha, Eriette, and Hylde to cast a great sleep, called the Wicked Slumber, over the plane, halting the invasion.

When the Phyrexians had been defeated and the Great Pruning occurred, Will and Rowan were stripped of their shared planeswalker spark. They quickly realized that the Wicked Slumber had not ended upon the Phyrexian’s defeat, and that instead it was being used by the planeswalker Ashiok and the witch Eriette to control the denizens of Eldraine.

However, instead of working together to lift the curse, the twins' relationship strained, and they split up to end the curse in their own way. While Will set out to put all those affected into glass caskets to protect them, Rowan set out to find the perpetrators.

Rowan would eventually discover Ashiok and Eriette, who told her of her familial connection to the witch and promised her power. Taking the offer, she joined the duo in their quest. When Will attempted to end the curse and stop Ashiok and Eriette, Will and Rowan fought each other. Will ended up the victor, defeating Ashiok and capturing Erietee; however, Rowan was able to escape. While Will is the current King of Castle Ardenvale, what has become of Rowan is unknown.

The Future

The bond between Will and Rowan Kenrith is a remarkable symbiosis of magical prowess and unyielding familial connection. Their destinies intricately woven, these siblings share a profound understanding and reliance on one another, their strengths complementing and enhancing when united.

Whether engaging in heated battles across the multiverse or navigating the complexities of their newfound planeswalker abilities, their inseparable bond is a beacon of unity, amplifying their magical potential and driving them forward in their enthralling journey through the vast and ever-expanding realm of Magic.
