Who is Kellan?
Kellan was born of the planeswalker Oko and a human hedgewitch on the plane of Eldraine. When the two separated, Kellan was raised by his mother and stepfather, Ronald, a shepherd in the small town of Orrinshire. Due to his fae blood, Kellan was always smaller than the other kids his age and was constantly picked on. It wasn’t until the events of the Wicked Slumber that Kellan acquired his Lightblades and made a name for himself by saving his plane from its long rest.
Story
When Kellan was sixteen years old, he was called on by the Kindly Fae Lord Talion to put an end to the three witch sisters Agatha, Eriette, and Hylda and end Eldraine’s Wicked Slumber. To aid him in his quest, Talion gifted Kellan two Lightblades, swords made of ethereal light that could harden into sharp points or slacken into whips, depending on the wielder’s prerogative.
On the first leg of his journey, Kellan met a girl named Ruby, who was on her own journey to find her lost brother. Together, the two of them searched for Agatha, but before they could find her, they were intercepted and chased by a wolf knight. With the assistance of Witchstalkers, Kellan and Ruby escaped the knight and soon found Agatha in her cottage in the woods.
Kellan defeated Agatha, pushing her into her cauldron and saving a knight named Imodane in the process. With Agatha dead, her enchantments began to wear off, revealing that the wolf knight was Ruby’s lost brother, Peter. Kellan returned Agatha’s cauldron to Talion, who directed Kellan to set out for a beanstalk in search of the magical mirror Indrelon.
Climbing the beanstalk with their vedalken guide Troyan, Kellan and Ruby arrived in Stormkeld, home of the giant Beluna and the location of the mirror Indrelon. Using the magical mirror, they discovered the location of the witch Hylda’s ice castle near Loch Larent.
While fighting through a group of frost warriors protecting the castle, Kellan fell under the spell of the Wicked Slumber and was rendered unconscious. Hylda, who was watching from her castle, took pity on Kellan and released him from his slumber. She informed the two adventurers that Talion was also responsible for the Wicked Slumber that infected Eldraine and relinquished her crown to Kellan.
With this new knowledge, Kellan and Ruby traveled to Castle Ardenvale to face the last witch, Eriette. Before they could locate her, they were captured by Rowan Kenrith, who was now working with the witch and the planeswalker Ashiok. The duo was only able to escape with the help of Will Kenrith, who assaulted Ardenvale with his fellow knights.
Together, Kellan and Will were able to stop Ashiok and capture Eriette, but Rowan escaped during the battle. Having finished his quest, Kellan returned to his mother, who told him about his blood father, Oko, and gave him an enchanted coat depicting the story of his parent's meeting. Determined to find his father, Kellan happens upon an omenpath, which deposits him on Ixalan.
Future
Is Oko on Ixalan? Only time will tell, as we are introduced to The Lost Caverns of Ixalan in November. But we now know one thing: Kellan and Oko’s story will be integral to the Magic tale going forward. It will be interesting to see how Kellan grows as a character and if he will walk the path of the planeswalker, as his father did before him.
