Ink-Eyes was a notorious ninja hailing from the plane of Kamigawa. A Nezumi (rat) known for her necromantic powers and cruelty, she inspired fear in many denizens of Kamigawa during the Kami War. Unlike the other ninja of Kamigawa who trafficked in stolen information and occasionally murder, Ink-Eyes’ unique abilities allowed her to claim the dead as servants for her demon master.
From a young age she was a member of the Okiba gang, but quickly ran afoul of the gang. Developing a reputation for being unnaturally cruel even to her fellow gang members, she was overcome by an intense need always be on top. Tiring of her antics, they banished her from the gang and abandoned her in the Takenuma Swamp.
Ink-Eyes fended for herself for a time, surviving by stealing from others. But eventually she was caught stealing from an ogre hermit named Muzan, who would put her onto her path of notoriety. Muzan took Ink-Eyes on as a pupil, recognizing her natural talents and teasing her with the potential power to be had if she became a kishinsuhaisha – a servant of a demon.
Muzan was a brutal teacher, not shying away from physical and mental punishments in order to instill his teachings. Undertaking many missions as a part of her training, Muzan would not put any limits on how the mission was to be accomplished, allowing her to tap into her darker tendencies. Undertaking some lessons on her own, she learned to meditate and become aware of the will of the Kami, or spirits, of the swamps.
Continuing her training outside the teachings of Muzan, she taught herself the art of ninjitsu through deep practice and study. She grew quite powerful, and when finally ready she slayed Muzan. In a special ceremony to their oni (demon), Kuro, she would proffer his blood as an offering. Impressed by the betrayal of her mentor, Kuro gifted Ink-Eyes with her renowned necromancy magic that would become her calling card. Kuro’s gift would instill one final change: her notable black-as-night eyes were forever changed to a blazing red.
