Dakkon Blackblade, also known as “Shadow Slayer” or “Dakkon the Avenger,” was a planeswalker originating from the plane of Dominaria. A renowned smith and warrior prior to becoming a planeswalker, he adopted his last name after forging the ancient and powerful sword known as the Blackblade.
Dakkon forged the Blackblade at the request of the planeswalker Geyadrone Dihada, who sensed Dakkon had a planeswalker spark within him. She offered to ignite it and make him a planeswalker if he could make her the most powerful sword ever made. In his desire for power, he accepted, and Dihada instructed him on ancient spells that would enhance the blade and make it a “soul drinker,” capable of stealing the souls of those it kills.
After finally completing the blade, Dakkon himself tested the blade in battle. The more he killed, the more powerful he felt as the souls of the dead enhanced him. Dihada would return for the blade after hearing of his success, fulfilling her promise and igniting his spark to make him a planeswalker. But directly following her ultimate gift, she betrayed Dakkon by stabbing his shadow with the blade and sapping his soul. Binding his soul to the blade but not killing him, Dakkon was unable to traverse the multiverse, instead being forced to stay on Dominaria.
Dakkon would re-appear in the history of Dominaria after wandering for many years when Dihada began a war on the island of Corondor and destroyed the city-state of Carth. The only survivor of the destruction was a young boy whom Dihada imprisoned after the war. Aided by a fellow prisoner, the boy would escape and seek revenge on Dihada for the destruction of his home. Using an ancient relic called the Amulet of T-Fu, he bound himself to Dakkon, forcing him into servitude and preventing Dakkon from hurting the boy.
After learning that the boy, whom he named Carth the Lion, was committed to destroying Dihada, Dakkon was overjoyed that his servitude was in service of that goal. Before they could seek her out, Dihada learned they had teamed up and sent her corrupted champion, the Swamp King Sol’Kanar, after them. Dakkon would defeat Sol’Kanar, but Dihada called to her aid Piru and Chromium, two powerful Elder Dragons. While Dakkon fought the dragons, Carth was able to steal the Blackblade from Dihada. Reunited with his powerful blade, Dakkon banished Chromium and killed Piru. Dihada’s full plan was then revealed as she absorbed the soul of Piru, making her even more powerful and placing her mark on Dakkon to force him to serve her.
Dakkon would travel with Carth until Carth’s death, after which he fully became Dihada’s champion. Dakkon last appears in Dominarian history by the side of Dihada during the Planeswalkers’ War on the island of Corondor, though little is known about the actual war.
Dakkon’s legacy lives on through his famous blade. Although no full recounting of its wielders exists, it next appears owned by an undead being named Korlash. It would later appear within the Cabal, and its history was rewritten to have been created by the demon Belzenlok. The sword’s final appearance would be during the War of the Spark when the planeswalker Gideon Jura tried to kill Nicol Bolas. Unknown to almost everyone, Nicol Bolas had seen the Blackblade before when it had killed his fellow Elder Dragon Piru, and he had enchanted the blade to prevent it from ever hurting an Elder Dragon again. Thus, the blade broke when Gideon attacked Bolas.
