Legends & Lore - Atraxa, the Grand Unifier

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Known as the Grand Unifier by her fellow Phyrexians, Atraxa answers only to Elesh Norn within the Machine Orthodoxy.

Currently a shining example of the insatiable and singular purpose of the Phyrexians and their quest for perfection, Atraxa was once an angel living on Mirrodin. After the corruption and invasion of the plane turned it into New Phyrexia, Atraxa joined the Mirran resistance but was captured after protecting her comrades as they retreated. Elesh Norn decided to bestow Phyrexian compleation upon the brave angel and gathered the other praetors to help.

Urabrask would not take part in the completion, but together Elesh Norn, Vorinclex, Sheoldred, and Jin-Gitaxias would sculpt Atraxa into the being she is today. After compleation, she would serve as Norn’s second in command and lead her forces as general, charged with bringing the plane of New Phyrexia to heel under Phyrexian rule.

In the multiverse-spanning Phyrexian invasion, Elesh Norn sent Atraxa and her forces to the plane of New Capenna, intent on recapturing old Phyrexian relics on the plane, including a ship and destroying the plane’s Halo spring. Elesh Norn needed the Halo destroyed as it can be harmful to Phyrexians and can provide some protection against phyresis.

Atraxa identified and corrupted the Maestros crime family, intending to utilize their interest in the history and relics of New Capenna to find that which she seeks. Also instructed to kill the people of New Capenna before she leaves, she has begun the destruction of the plane, beginning with the Maestro’s museums.
