Dice Forge

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Build your dice and may the odds be ever in your favor!

I am always looking for games that are unlike the rest. I enjoy dice-rolling games, but sometimes randomness can ruin the enjoyment of a game. Dice Forge adds strategy to the classic dice-rolling game, allowing you to build dice that will put the odds more in your favor.

The goal of the game is to have the most glory points after a series of rounds. You earn gold in order to buy new faces to add to your dice, forging new die that increase your odds of earning better rewards. Players also acquire Sun and Moon shards which allow you to buy creature cards that grant you new abilities, ongoing effects, or immediate actions in addition to their glory. Overall, this is a fun and pretty game with a unique mechanic unseen in any other game!

Katie’s Radar:

ART: 6/10

I love vibrant colors and enjoy the more cartoonish nature, especially when I am not in a serious mood.

STORYTELLING: 2/10

You get to choose your own character and you vaguely get a sense of exploring during the day and night to see what creatures you come across.

COMPONENTS: 9/10

First of all, the box insert has a unique place for EVERY ITEM. This is a huge win for me usability-wise. Secondly, the transparent, colored, plastic cubes bring a nice aesthetic to the game. The die faces are also durable enough to be popped in and out of the die without scuffing any of the printing. The board and the player mats have a spot for everything making it intuitive and convenient for playing the game.

COMPLEXITY: 5/10

You have to be good at probability in order to truly optimize where your dice faces go. But the game is very straightforward: you get different types of currency, then you spend that currency on either a die face or a creature card. The complexity comes with the varying strategies.

TRAVEL-FRIENDLY: 1/10

This must be packed as a box. The game insert has a location for everything which is super convenient, but if I were to try and separate this into a smaller box, it would be a giant pain to reorganize all the die faces for every game. Perhaps you could get a bead box or two for the pieces, but you are still left with the board and player mats.

UNIQUENESS: 6/10

I have never seen a game that lets you manipulate dice so that immediately gives this a high grade. Otherwise, the general gameplay is much like other games where you have different currencies that you use to buy different things.
