Deck of the Week: Modern Living End

The new Magic set, Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth, has already made large splashes in the Modern meta. While The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters have been the talk of the town, they are not the only cards from the new set pushing the modern’s power levels. With the help of some new Elephants and Treefolk, Living End took down the NRG Series Modern 10K this past weekend!

For those new to the deck, Living End is a combo-control deck that aims to control the early game while setting up its graveyard for a game-ending play. The deck revolves around the eponymous card, Living End, which functions as a one-sided boardwipe and a reanimator spell, essentially resetting the board and leaving opponents in shambles.

Paired alongside creatures with Cycling, like the new cards Oliphaunt and Generous Ent from Lord of the Rings, Living End can consistently find its key pieces and follow through with its combo. All it needs is an easy way to cast Living End, which is why it uses eight cards with Cascade, which both find and cast it for free.

This build of Living End, created and piloted by Fletcher Johnson, took down the 306-player tournament this past weekend, defeating Mono-White Hammertime in the finals. Could this be the new optimal build of Living End? Only time and scoreboards will tell!
